France - French renewable energy company Voltalia has started construction of the 32MW Râ Solar Plant in Egypt, its first solar power project in Africa, the company recently announced.
The Râ Solar Plant is located in the Ben Ban solar park, in the Aswan region of Egypt.
Voltalia, which also has a global presence, made the announcement at the beginning of November 2018 at the Africa Investments Forum in Paris.
The commissioning of the solar plant is scheduled for the second half of 2019, and the project will benefit from a 25-year power sales contract with the state-owned power utility Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC).
With a capacity of 1.8GW, the Ben Ban solar park is one of the world’s largest solar complexes.
In line with its commitments to the Paris Agreement in 2015, Egypt expects to bring the total solar installed capacity of the Ben Ban solar park to 2GW. The solar park will also help the country to avoid the emission of 2 million tons of greenhouse gases per year, while improving access to affordable and clean energy in Egypt.
The Râ Solar Plant, developed by Voltalia, will be constructed and managed by the company. The solar plant will be equipped with 93,150 Suntech PV panels a capacity of 345W per panel. The panels will be mounted on single-axis trackers.
At the peak of construction activities, the solar plant project is expected to employ about 150 workers.
Voltalia, which is an international player in the renewable energy sector, produces and sells electricity generated from wind, solar, hydro and biomass power plants and currently owns a total installed capacity of 524 MW globally.
The company has also already announced plans to develop an 800MW portfolio in Egypt in the next 5 to 8 years.
